Bayan Baru Toastmasters Club (BBTMC) was formed to cater to the growing needs of the local residents of the Bayan Baru township and the surrounding areas in particular and the population of Penang in general. Many of the residents consist of young working adults (and those who are young at heart) who have a desire to improve themselves in communication and leadership skills as well as to foster better relationships with one another.

Towards the end of 1995, the PDC Toastmasters Club received many requests from the Bayan Baru residents to help them form a community club. With the encouragement of the then District 51P Lieutenant-Governor of Marketing, SL Liew DTM, the PDC Toastmasters Club decided to take up this challenge of sponsoring a new club. SL Liew DTM (National Semiconductors Toastmasters & Butterworth Toastmasters Club) and Margaret Chan DTM (PDC Toastmasters Club) then worked together to sponsor this club. Another 2 members of PDC Toastmasters Club, Lee So Cheran and Rizal Fauzi, were appointed as mentors of the club.

The sponsors approached the Bayan Baru Residents Association (BBRA), headed by Tuan Syed Jaafar b Syed Ali, to assist in forming the new club as one of its community projects. BBRA felt that it was a worthwhile project as it would provide training in communication and leadership skills to the Bayan Baru residents and gave it’s full blessing and the initial financial assistance to start the club.

The BBTMC held its inaugural meeting on January 4, 1996 at the BBRA clubhouse at 1-J Jalan Nibong. About 70 persons comprising members of the public, BBRA members and other Toastmasters Club members attended the meeting. A total of 24 persons signed up as Charter Members and the club applied to Toastmasters International, USA to charter the club. On February 28, 1996, BBTC was officially chartered by Toastmasters International and was given the Club No. 7764 under District 51P (covering clubs in Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia). BBTC was the 10th club in Penang. The Charter President was Adrian Ung, CTM, a young and dynamic person who led the club to success even in its first year of existence.

Over the years, Bayan Baru Toastmasters Club has made great progress and has achieved much success.
